My other huge, life-consuming project this past year was CAPfest.

Those of you that know me know that this project was my baby for the past 3 years. And I'm happy to say that by the 3rd year it really started to shape up to what I originally envisioned: a community parade/festival that connects MICA with Baltimore using art as a common ground.

Shout out to everybody who helped me out with this. I love you all <3

To start, I finished my thesis, and graduated from MICA.

Got a lot of good feedback on the quilt in the Commencement exhibition. It also won the "People's Choice Award" at this years Sowebo Arts and Music Festival.

The Baltimore Album Quilt

"I’ve always been involved in quilting as an art medium. Quilts have a history of story telling, comfort, decoration, and community, but they were not always considered a fine art. In the past, women would create incredibly intricate fiber works, but these were only considered “craft” not “fine art” as if they are lesser in some way than painting or drawing. Therefore, these women were not considered artists, and went unnoticed. This has fueled my fiber work, my research on quilting and has kept me questioning the usage of the word “craft” vs. “art.”

Environment has been the main inspiration for my work, even though I don’t always intend for it to be. Everything I make is influenced by my thoughts about the place I am currently residing. When I move, my subject matter changes. But for now, I am dealing with Baltimore.

Since I’ve moved to Maryland for college, I’ve had mixed feelings about this city. Using the layout of the historical Baltimore Album Quilts, I’ve created a patchwork of the good, the bad, and the ugly of Baltimore."

This is still in the works, but you can at least get an idea of what is going on in my head/studio.

This past summer was lovely. I am sad to see it go.

I was lucky enough to score an internship with A.C.Moore Arts and Crafts. It was through their corporate office, but I was working in the South Philly store, learning to do pretty much everything at store level. It was the first time the company has had interns, so it was definitely interesting. Their thinking was that if I wanted to work at the corporate office (maybe doing design work or store planning) I would have an understanding of how things work at store level. Which, I think, is super important. For a lot of companies, decisions made at the corporate level seem to make sense, but once they've hit individual stores it doesn't always work out. Each intern was also assigned a special project for the duration of the summer. Mine was to figure out a way to get more of the art school students into the south Philly store (and all A.C.Moore stores) to buy their art supplies. So I designed a discount card/brochure, changed the layout of the store, and put together lists of materials they should start supplying, as well as materials they already supply that art students would come looking for. I ended up giving my presentation to the VIPs of the company, which was really cool.

MICA Names Two Seniors as France-Merrick Community Arts Partnerships Fellows for 2009-10

"CAIT BYRNES ’10 TO ORGANIZE 2010 CAPFEST; SARAH WREN ’10 TO WORK WITH TEENAGE GIRLS ON EMPOWERMENT ISSUES

BALTIMORE--MICA awards rising seniors Cait Byrnes of Toms River, N.J., and Sarah Wren of Perry, Ohio, France-Merrick Community Arts Partnerships Fellowships to create and implement new fine arts programs in Baltimore City neighborhoods over the course of the 2009-2010 academic year.

The annual fellowships recognize exemplary work, commitment, and dedication to Baltimore communities through previous experience with MICA's Community Arts Partnerships (CAP) program and new project proposals. The fellows will receive $3,500 through an endowment provided by the France-Merrick Foundation, which believes community service should be an essential part of collegiate life.

In most cases, the artists develop comprehensive lesson plans that support predetermined educational goals and outcomes; articulate a strategy that encourages participating individuals to try out, practice, and apply new skills, knowledge, and attitudes to real, art-based problems; and manage the on-site activities and responsibilities that relate to the project.

Cait Byrnes '10, who is pursuing a degree in general fine arts (BFA) with a concentration in photography and a minor in art history, will organize the 2010 CAPfest celebration. She will add a parade to the community arts festival and will organize workshops for MICA students and the general public to fabricate masks, costumes, and instruments for the event.

Byrnes has been a key creator of CAPfest, which has taken place since spring 2008 and includes an exhibition of CAP site and CAP intern artwork.

"I think the parade will help bring CAPfest to the level I had originally envisioned it: using the artistic process to create interaction between MICA and its surrounding communities as well as generate awareness of the CAP program and the power of community art," Byrnes said

Byrnes has taught a senior art club at Memorial apartments, assisted in organizing the campus event CAP Appreciation Day, as well as led lantern and float building workshops in coordination with Nana Projects, Inc., for the Great Halloween Lantern Parade in Patterson Park.

Sarah Wren '10, who is majoring in general fine arts (BFA), will work with teenage girls to focus on issues of empowerment and self-worth. She will organize workshops with guest speakers and performers as well as teach fiber skills. The girls will construct "identity" or "power" suits that celebrate the mind, body, and soul, which will be featured in a fashion show celebration.

"For me, the art aspect of community arts is really just a vehicle to establish meaningful relationships and connections," Wren said. "My project might include the occasional splash of magenta or dusting of glitter, but at its heart it serves as genuine positive self-esteem reinforcement and the development of a ‘can do' attitude."

Wren has participated in the CAP program since her first semester of freshmen year. She has worked in a variety of Baltimore neighborhoods and with people of all ages, particularly children, by completing internships at Better Waverly Community Arts Center, Eutaw-Marshburn Elementary School, Follow your Dreams, Inc., Good Shepherd Center, and School 33 Art Center.

One of last year's France-Merrick recipients, Caroline Van Sicklin '10, of Pound Ridge, N.Y., demonstrates the successful completion of a fellowship project through her partnership with Mount Washington Pediatric Hospital.

Van Sicklin, who is pursuing a bachelor of fine arts degree in photography, a master of arts degree in teaching, as well as a minor in art history, completes her 2008-2009 fellowship this summer. She has worked with the Mount Washington Pediatric Hospital's staff, patients, and families to glaze ceramic tiles for a mural that will be installed this month in the hospital's healing garden.

"The project's objective was to make the healing garden's wall more colorful and beautiful, and more importantly, to help the children make an impact on the hospital, the way it has made an impact on them," Van Sicklin said.

The hospital plans to host the mural opening in early July, and Van Sicklin will offer postcards of the completed mural to the participants and community.

Van Sicklin's previous volunteering efforts include teaching a first-grade art class at Eutaw-Marshburn Elementary School and an after-school art class for 5- to 8-year-olds at School 33 Art Center.

The annual France-Merrick Community Arts Partnerships Fellowships provide financial support for MICA students engaged in community service through the College's Community Arts Partnerships (CAP) program. Established in 1998 with funding from The Wallace Foundation, CAP involves students in community-based art projects in neighborhoods that are among the most economically and culturally challenged in Baltimore City. CAP projects have covered a wide array of visual arts, including murals, collage, puppetry, fabric art, costumes, book making, digital art, video, animation, photography, and photojournalism.

The majority of my work has been influence by my feelings about the place I am currently in. As my environment changes, so does my work, according to what I feel the need to talk about and what I need to make.

Italy, unexpectedly, turned my work a little feminist.

The aggressiveness of Italian men turned me off pretty quickly, and led me to look more closely at the way females (of all nationalities) are treated in Italy. From Italian TV to magazines and advertisements, women are extremely sexualized and objectified. Sex is used to sell things that shouldn’t need it. Women are on display 24/7 in Italy.

Shop windows are extremely important to the center of Florence. Commonly, while walking on the small sidewalks you are forced to stop for someone looking at the windows, examining the contents and then usually walking away. This is how I feel here. Women are being viewed, but not really considered. Stared at for a minute, then thrown away. Feelings, personality, or anything more about a person are never considered.

The prints became a way for me to refer to Florence specifically. All the designs are based on famous Florence landmarks. The decision to make them into garments reflects the importance of the fashion industry in Italy, and how that also has an affect on the way women are viewed.

I’ve placed myself in my prints, within the shop windows.

I am in LOVE with her porcelain sea sponges, and her work with horses is stunning. She also experiments with fusing different materials and processes, some of which have never been done before successfully (seriously, she's amazing)

A few weekends ago I had a chance to see the Gothic show at the FIT Museum. After hearing excellent reviews from the fibers department I really wanted to see it, and I have to say I was not let down.

"Gothic is an epithet with a strange history, evoking images of death, destruction, and decay. It is not just a word that describes something (such as a Gothic cathedral); it is almost inevitably a term of abuse, implying that something is gloomy, barbarous, and macabre. Ironically, its negative connotations have made it, in some respects, ideal as a symbol of rebellion. Hence its significance for youth subcultures. Today the words "goth" and "gothic" are popularly associated with black-clad teenagers and mascara'd rock musicians. But the gothic has many layers of meaning."

And the exhibition set out to show those different layers. It started off with historical pieces of jewelery and mourning gowns from the 19th century, which were displayed in insets in the wall with funerary scenes set up.

The show progresses around a ruined castle/cemetery set, with some gorgeous designer pieces, including this excellent Alexander McQueen dress, which was from a collection inspired by one of his ancestors (who was executed for witchcraft).

After you get around the circular format of the ruined castle/cemetery room, you run into a cabinet-like structure, which was referred to as the 'bat cave'. The two way glass was lit in intervals of about 5 min, so you could only look into it at certain times and contained more everyday goth outfits from "from old-school goth to cyber goth." Which was a nice way to end the show, and bring it into a more contemporary, ready to wear context.

My only issue with the show had to do with their curatorial decisions. The over all darkness and creepy feeling was great, but the built ruined castle structures made it really difficult to view the actual pieces, and it made it impossible to see from certain angles. And when it comes to these super structural pieces, I wanted to see as much as possible. The Bat Cave, honestly, just frustrated me. It was a pretty large case, and 5 minutes was not nearly enough time to see everything inside. and once the lighting changed and it turned back into a mirror, it STAYED a mirror for another 5 min. So I had to walk around while it was the mirror, and then run back when it changed. I love the idea of an exhibition being interactive, but this just got annoying. I think I would have appreciated it more if it didn't stay a mirror so long. Maybe 5 min transparent, 30 seconds mirror.

Regardless, it was a great show, and I highly recommend stopping by the FIT Museum if you are in the city. The show is up till February 21, totally check it out.

The Great Halloween Lantern Parade

For the past two fall semesters I've been interning at Nana Projects in Baltimore. Their major fall project is The Great Halloween Lantern Parade, which happens every year in Patterson Park. The month before the Parade, the Creative Alliance and Nana Projects host free lantern making workshops every weekend open to the public. We provide all materials, and help put the lanterns together (mostly so they will stay fire safe, we put actual candles in them!) Everyone who makes a lantern is welcome to come and participate in the procession in and around the park, or you can come watch. We also have loads of stilt walkers, giant lanterns and puppets built by Nana Projects and experienced lantern builders in the community. In years past the parade ended with a Magic Lantern Show, which is a projected animation performed live by the Nana Projects staff. This year the finale was set up more like a party, with food and live music, which was loads of fun.

Besides working at the lantern workshops I also got to work with two local schools building small "floats" for the parade, which were built onto carts that could be pulled. The actual structures were built entirely of reed, tracing paper, paint and masking tape, which is pretty crazy.

I really love this event. For me it totally captures the idea of the community arts event; bringing people together using art as a common ground. Thousands of people come out to make lanterns, and for part of the procession, they are the only thing that lights the park. It's an incredible sight.

I wish I had gotten better photos of this.... but I was running around directing people all night, so I didn't really have a chance to stop and photograph.

Lorna Simpson

My digital photo teacher Colette suggested a few artists to look at in reference to our next project, and I really kinda love Lorna Simpson. Most of her work pertains to issues of gender and race, and she has a series of serigraphs printed on felt panels, which I adore. There is also usually an accompanying felt text panel for her felt works, which for this piece "The Bed" reads:

"It is late, decided to have a quick nightcap at the hotel having checked in earlier that morning. Hotel security is curious and knocks on the door to inquire as to what's going on, given our surroundings we suspect that maybe we have broken "the too many dark people in the room code." More privacy is attained depending on what floor you are on, if you are in the penthouse suite you could be pretty much assured of your privacy, if you were on the 6th or 10th floor there would be a knock on the door."

I decided to do some work relating to body image, and how the media has a tendency to make us all question our own bodies. It really makes me feel like I'm never good enough.

1st assignment for Inside/Outside involved a mason jar with small plastic animals/plants inside them. We were basically allowed to do whatever, so I embroidered my giraffe with palm trees inside the jar. I was thinking about the whole idea of being inside or outside and, in this case, the longing for one or the other.

This was awesome. There was a really excellent mix of historic pieces of fabric and clothing and contemporary work that all utilized indigo dying techniques.

Blue comes up all the time for me, there is something so wonderful about it. I love that there is so much history in the pigment and there is such an intense process involved in just acquiring the indigo.

Its really interesting.

I begged and pleaded with my academic advisor to try to get me out of my last drawing requirement for my degree. After telling me to 'suck it up,' she recommended the Inside/Outside studio drawing class. I was a little reluctant, but luckily mixed media and experimentation is highly encouraged in the class, so I'm feeling good about it. We talked a lot about the idea of being inside and outside and space, and windows came up quite a bit. Oddly enough my fall semester of last year (sophmore year) I did a lot of window paintings and photos. Maybe this will work out somehow.

Was AWESOME! I spent 4 long days at Towson University with the lovely Nana Projects staff learning about everything Parade Arts: from puppet-making, to parade logistics, to make and takes to stilt walking. And in 4 days we put together a really colorful parade! I met alot of really great people from all over the world, and I hope that I will have the opportunity to work with some of them again.

The group I was working with put together a large jellyfish puppet that I designed to be totally colapsable, so it will fit through doors. It was held in a pole underneath, with 1 large tentacle on each side meant to be worn by 2 people (due to technical difficulties, we only had Kay on both of them, but whatever).

And how awesome is stilt-walking. Come on now.

Racial Map Quilt

Intro to GFA (General Fine Arts) final. The quilt is directly based on two census maps of Baltimore from the year 2000. One showed the most densely populated areas of African Americans, the other showed the most densely populated areas of Caucasians. I merged them together and created a range of skin tones from the palest white to the darkest black. The quilt is fully batted and everything, its an actual usable quilt.* It ended up being part of an installation, on top of a body cast of myself, with some garbage strewn, and the original statistics hanging next to it.

*on the note of usability, I'm noticing I have a desire to make functional objects. Weird, but something to think about.

African Dolls

Final for African Art forms, inspired by African wooden fertility dolls. The dolls are used in a fertility ritual, and then the hopeful mother caries the doll around and treats it like a baby; dresses it, watches after it and all that. And then when her actual child is born she can pass it on as a playtoy.

Going into my 4th semester as a CAP intern, I tried to find a way to integrate community arts with my personal work and ideas. My first year at MICA I had a difficult time adjusting to this very different environment, and I think that was partially because i didn’t have a way to interact with it. My CAP internships and the Finding Baltimore class helped me to start getting off campus and to experience the community, and honestly, it made me feel so much better. Suddenly I wasn’t a tourist anymore, I actually knew a little bit about my surroundings.
So now that I’m a tier 3 intern, I decided to take that a step further. Over the summer I did alot of work at the Leadershape conference with my personal visions and goals, and steps I wanted to take to “change the world.” As cliche and after school special as that sounds, it gave me a lot of insight, and I realized I wanted a way continue to blur the line between MICA and BALTIMORE using what we all know best... art (duh). It just seemed so silly to me that a community of artists were so cut off from everybody around them when art is such a great tool to connect with and reach out to people. Hence, CAPfest was born, using an old CAP event, The Spring Festival, as a jumping off point. The old event included a parade of artwork made at various site, free art workshops, food, and live music. I wanted to recapture some of that spirit, and start that tradition rolling again. My main goal with the fest was to get people from the community and MICA students to interact with each other, in hopes of establishing new connections and relationships.
And what better way to promote this connection between MICA students and community members than to display the artwork they make together in a gallery on campus? It seemed like an obvious collaboration between my ideas and the project Anna Ishii had been planning for her France Merrick Fellowship, CAPtions.
Using a grant from the Student Affairs Community Fund and the help of our awesome volunteers, we were able to set up some small make and take art activities for the fest, and the other France Merrick Fellows, Hannah Baker and Margaret Hull, were able to have a silkscreening table going. The screenprinting was a huge hit for the MICA students, and the Bolton Hill kids loved the face painting and sidewalk chalk. Everybody was really into the exhibition, we even managed to get the Senior Art Club from the Marlborough Apts. to the reception.
Overall I’d call the event a success, but I definitely have more ideas for the future. This won’t be the last you hear of Cait Byrnes and CAPfest.
